Thursday night, weekday night. Yes, I know. For most of us, it's work Friday morning.
Routine? Yes! Get things dome, go to bed. I have work tomorrow, so yes get it done.
Rush home past traffic, cook, eat, clean, iron, quick shower, (and if time permits, pray), sleep!
Have you ever felt like the week just runs by? Have you planned so much in a day, but merely get things done? Have you gotten into a boring routine and nothing seems exciting anymore? You have the picture of what you desire but days just seem to fly by, everything remains the same, nothing excites anymore...
If yes, I feel you dear reader. I have been that person. I have been stuck in a routine that doesn't seem to change anything, same stuff, different day. Trying to make it (barely) with no means to the end.
'Ok, what now?' I hear you ask... 'I 'm glad someone feels me, but is there a solution to different?' 'Can I achieve more and move closer to the person I am versus the person I envision?' 'What different is required of me for this to happen?'
I'm glad you asked... :)
The common denominator between the rich and the poor is time. And may I add, what we choose to do with this free resource is the real deal. Some of the questions worth asking then are, yes, I have a routine (check), I have a job to pay my rent and bills (check), I have some extra money to spare for whatever I like to do (check). Year in, year out. Then boredom kicks in. Comparison kicks in. 'How come everyone seems to have it all but me?' 'I feel stuck... Same stuff different day!'
If you have gotten this far, well done! The answer is, what we do today determines who we become tomorrow. You already know this :)
What then?
Mindset, goals, and mostly WHY we do what we do. We all have 24 hrs in a day. What we choose to do with them, is what makes the difference.
Richard Branson, the C.E.O. of Virgin Airlines said, and I quote, "The best advice I could give anyone is to spend your time working on whatever you are passionate about in life.”
There you have it. The reason you stuck in an endless routine, is because you haven't taken an opportunity to find yourself, your passion, your goals, your WHY.
Working 9-5? Well done! We have all been there. But if you still feel unfulfilled, here's what you need to know. There's something WITHIN you that's awaiting to be birthed. Your purpose. And you will not feel fulfilled, until you find your her. Each and everyone has something unique about us, that is deeply engraved in the very core of our being, awaiting to be birthed. The truth is, we will remain feeling empty, until we find it.
How do we find it? I'm glad you asked ;) I don't have all the answers, but at least I can try. Because I have asked the very same question, more than 1 time, 2 times, 3 times, and perhaps still asking...
You know that thing that everyone complements you for? That thing that makes you come alive inside? That thing that you do and you don't even check the time because you are so engaged that at times you don't even remember to eat? That thing that you think is obvious and everyone does it so no big deal? YES THAT THING!
Some of us may be thinking, I have no idea what you're talking about. And its okay. At least you coming to a time of self reflection, and not being so caught up in doing this thing called life that you forgot to actually 'live'. I know this because I have been that person that answered this very same thing, time and again, and perhaps expecting different results! Definition of insanity, right?
For me, if someone ask how my day was, or a friend we haven't caught up with for a while, I would go like, nothings changed. And immediately feel guilty because I know that's not true. In my heart of hearts, I would know that I have been running a corporate ladder. Trying to make things happen, as opposed to having the strategy of what fulfills me.
If like me, you're tired of routine that does not seem fulfilling, then here's a few tips of somethings that could help, these have worked in some areas of my life, as well as other people I know of;
1) Self reflection
There's power in self reflection. Taking time off routine and listening to the 'inner voice'. For some, this could mean going to a quiet place like a park, the beach or a walk. For others, it could mean taking a holiday, or going out of town, in a place that is not familiar where creativity is inspired and created.
2) The tribe
Who are the people sorrounding us?
And what are they speaking into our lives?
My mentor Fadzi often says that you are the sum of the 5 people you spend most of your time with. This could not be further from the truth, as it has been proven time and again, that we become like those we surround ourselves with.
Are those people bringing the best in you? Speaking life to you? Inspiring you to be better? Challenging you in good faith? If no to 2 of these, then reassess your company.
3)The higher power
My faith is Christian, and Jesus gives me a hope for my future. I'm not here to say that everyone should be like me, but I strongly believe that having a connection to a being higher than self brings a whole new perspective to an individual's life. Life is very challenging, and many are the times as humans where we plan and get disappointed when life takes a turn that we did not expect. That could be a new diagnosis, death or even breakdown of a relationship. When confronted with such life changing moments, that could challenge your why, the 'Higher being' brings a perspective.
4) Take massive action
Desires, thoughts, and words remain fruitless, until some action backs the up. There's a saying that goes words without action is like a heart without a beat, useless!!
Every task will seem impossible until done. Therefore, to bring our desires to pass will require more than wishing and hoping. It will require folding our sleeves and getting into WORK!
For those who work 9-5, it might mean sacrificing some hours of yournsleep to work on that 'dream plan'. For others, it might mean saying 'no' more often to say 'yes' to our goals and dreams. Yet for others, it might mean self-motivation, self-drive, and self-discipline. It will also mean making a decision to stick to our plans, even if something 'better' that more that often is distracting shows up, such as social media (hello millenials ;)
To conclude, Thursday night does not seem so bad after all as I can envision better Thursdays. As I rush to my routine, I will remember to be more present, mindful, and know that I am enough. I will work not just for today, but from a place of knowing what I want to become. Then I will anticipate without anxiety, knowing that it is my job to work, and God's to bring the fruit of my work to fruition. I will surround myself with those who not only see me for who I am, but for who I can become. Only then will I birth my dreams, goals, my purpose and most of all, my WHY.
